Integrating Genetic and Management Approaches to Nutrient Use Efficiency in Plants

Tuesday 7th October, 10:30-11:30 am, at Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, Bush Estate, EH26 0QB

Plant scientists have long recognized the need to develop crops that absorb and utilize nutrients more efficiently. Three basic approaches have been used to improve nutrient use efficiency (NUE) in crops. The first involves using best management practices to increase NUE while at the same time reducing N loss into the environment. The second approach involves using traditional breeding and marker assisted selection in an attempt to identify genes involved in NUE. The third approach involves using novel gene constructs designed to improve specific aspects of NUE. This seminar will discuss some of our recent research aimed at improving NUE in crops, and our research into the genetic manipulation of NUE in crop plants.
